Understanding your microscope: An introduction to clinical microscopy

Nuview, distributor of high-quality magnification and illumination equipment has joined forces with education provider Cede to provide a course aimed at introducing GDPs and dental nurses to the art of clinical microscopy.

The one-day workshop, hosted by Dr Bill Seddon, took place on Friday, May 7th 2010 at the Wakefield Academy in Yorkshire and offered dental professionals the opportunity not only to gain valuable knowledge on this useful skill, but also earn six hours CPD.

Delegates enjoyed a comprehensive lecture on the techniques behind effective clinical microscopy, leaving them confident and competent in how to make the most of their equipment.

Topics covered were-

• The basics of microscope usage: How to get the best out of your equipment
• Positioning and maneuverability
• Working on difficult teeth and how to overcome common problems
• Imaging and documentation

Nuview, sole UK distributors of Carl Zeiss microscopes, was delighted to provide each attendee with full access to a Zeiss microscope for the duration of the lecture, providing the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with the market-leading technology.

For accompanying nurses, a separate lecture on the role of the dental nurse in support of dental microscopy was also included in the timetable.

Nuview proud suppliers of CEDE Educational Courses 2010

Nuview, distributor of high-quality magnification and illumination equipment, is proud to be providing equipment for a range of upcoming CEDE educational events.

Delegates who attended the one-day ‘Introduction to Dental Microscopy’ lecture on Friday 7th May, were able to get hands-on with market-leading Carl Zeiss microscopes. The course was aimed at GDPs who had had limited experience with clinical microscopy, and Nuview the sole UK distributor of Zeiss microscopes, was proud to be providing each delegate with equipment to use alongside mentoring from Dr Bill Seddon.

Saturday 8th saw delegates enjoying an extensive course on Artistic Anterior Composites, led by Jason Smithson. Attendees supplemented the lecture information with practical training using Nuview supplied microscopes and loupes.

The weekend of verifiable CPD courses gave participating clinicians the opportunity to put the theory into practice and gain hands-on experience with market leading products, gaining skills that can be implemented into day-to-day practice.

Testimonials

Went to Birmingham on Saturday to see Bill and Jaana Seddon. A small group of dentists, nurses and a technician converged on Highfield House to be welcomed by John and Barbara from NuView and Russell from SybronEndo.

Bill began by outlining the day ahead before the nurses left with Jaana to talk about 4 handed instrument handling, posture and other important stuff while Bill accurately assessed his audience and started at the beginning with the basics of scope design, how to site them and so on while keeping an eye out for those not keeping up.

After coffee we regrouped around some technoscopes and were tested on focussing, depths of field and fields of view using patterned triangular cards and target sheets.

Lunch was a crisp cucumber slice above anything found in a postgrad institute and then the moment of truth in the phantom head room.

You could see Bill’s point about there being a learning curve as we watched our colleagues peering into the scopes and waving their hands around in front of them as if demented crustaceans and wondering why their hands hadn’t appeared in the field of view.

But, we improved and even managed to place rubber dam using the scope.
Bill and Jaana were VERY patient. We were then treated to a masterclass by the pair in patient positioning, instrument passing, posture, accessing all surfaces of a tooth and so on.

Throughout the day there were excellent AV presentations including several video appearances of the great man himself, Gary Carr.
On the journey home I asked my nurse Louise if she had enjoyed herself. She said she hadn’t known what to expect but had really enjoyed the whole day.

Thanks Bill and (slim) Jaana for a great day

Dr A Fee
