The Microscope in Dentistry
Description
When making a decision during treatment, what you can see is a key criterion to your clinical evaluation. Time and time again during your work as a dentist, you almost certainly experience situations in which you would like to have more precise, magnified vision.
The possibilities offered by modern microscope systems have enormously extended the limits of visualisation. Since its inception in 1953, the surgical microscope has become firmly established in numerous medical fields across abroad range of clinical applications. A large number of surgical procedures would now be totally inconceivable without the use of a microscope.
In dentistry, the microscope has also redefined the concept of visualisation. Particularly in the field of endodontics, the microscope is now generally recognised as an essential element in dentist's daily armamentarium and part of the basic academic curriculum in endodontic programmes worldwide. Beyond the endodontic practice, the role of the microscope has received increased attention in general dentistry to further enhance the quality of the dentists work, obtain aesthetic outcomes and conserve long term dental health for patients. In addition, the integrated or attachable camera and video equipment of modern microscope systems permits the dentist to involve patients to a much greater extent in the treatment process and increase overall treatment compliance. A magnified microscopic image is worth more than a thousand words. It allows you to clearly explain the treatment and impressively demonstrate your skills. Lat but not least, the dental microscope makes it possible for you to sit in an ergonomically correct , relaxed and upright posture during therapy.

Take a Closer Look
Description
Why the Carl Zeiss OPMI Pico could become your new best friend
All dentists have probably found themselves wishing that they could see the treatment site more clearly. The routine use of microscopes in dentistry was originally the preserve of the endodontist, facilitating key procedures like canal location or obturation. Now, most dentists have realised the benefits of high-quality magnification and the chance to integrate microscopicexamination and microsurgical techniques into their treatment lists. The Carl Zeiss OPMI Pico provides dentists with a magnification solution that allows a perfectly balanced posture, maintaining the natural curvatures of the spine. It enables comfortable stereoscopic vision and its integrated light source means that hard-to-reach areas of the treatment site can be seen in bright light conditions. Nuview provides dentists, throughout the UK, with the Carl Zeiss OPMI Pico, and the team has noticed that many customers want to use it in general dentistry. Although the microscope is superb for specialist dentistry, its features give it the versatility to meet the needs of every dentist. Uses include crown preparation, margin preparation and, detecting the slightest cracks in the dentition. The microscope also unlocks new opportunities, enabling all dentists to carry out endodontic treatment if they wish. This is of real benefit in the competitive age of multidisciplinary dentistry.
What makes it special? From a purely mechanical perspective, the microscope is an example of world-class engineering. The lenses are of high quality, and the application of apochromatic technology means that there is very little chance of chromatic aberration, in which certain colours do not focus simultaneously. No extra space is required in the surgery, and there are no external cables to create hazards during procedures. Settings can be changed without interrupting procedures, thanks to the easy-to-reach controls and a selection of filters that prevents premature curing and delivers enhanced visibility of tissue structures. The MORA (mechanical optical rotating assembly) interface makes the OPMI Pico even more manoeuvrable. It can be repositioned with one hand – so the dentist can remain comfortable even when the angle of view changes. Dentists can move from an overview of the site to a detailed view instantly, and the superb visibility makes the equipment invaluable in periodontics, endodontics, cosmetic and restorative dentistry.
Making a choice Since microscopes are a one-off purchase, making the right choice is highly important. Cost is a contributing factor, as is the aftercare service provided. Nuview has a dedicated specialist to assist the dental team with developing its approach to imaging and image management. The OPMI Pico is considerably less expensive than some may expect of a product boasting the Carl Zeiss stamp of quality. This is especially true with the leading supplier’s package for GDPs. The intention is to provide general dental practitioners with high-end microscopes for prices that have been unheard of in the dental technology market. This enables GDPs to enjoy the benefits of five-stage magnification, an excellent light source, built-in colour filters, inclinable binocular, lateral output port and additional options of ceiling or wall mount.
Carl Zeiss Ltd’s UK headquarters gives access to a 41-strong team of expert engineers who know Carl Zeiss technology well. The supplier of the OPMI Pico has also invested in a purpose-built 3,000 square-feet unit and a demonstration facility where, to ensure they make the right choice, dentists can try out the company’s range of magnification solutions, including the OPMI Pico. The OPMI Pico has helped many dentists to make the most of their skills and meet the expectations of patients by providing a quality, ergonomically sound solution to magnification and illumination.

Our Microscope
We use so many different tools that you may be surprised to find one singled out for special mention, but the microscope is probably the most important instrument that I possess. After all, there is not much point in having excellent drills if I cannot see what I am doing!
Operating microscopes were unheard of when I started in dentistry, and even today very few Practices have them. This is partly due to their high cost (my Zeiss ‘scope cost £18,000), and partly due to the fact that, until you have used one and become used to using it (which you cannot really do until you have bought one) you really do not think that you need one.
It is only when you start to work with the level of magnification that the microscope provides, that you realise that you can see what you are doing for the first time. And what a difference that makes!
At first it slows you down – a lot. Because you can see detail that was invisible before, you can do a much better job, and more easily, but the greater attention to detail makes you slower, and the quality of the finished work much higher.
You never regain the speed that you had when you could not see the detail, but you become faster simply through being able to see exactly what you are doing.
This is all very obvious, but would you want to have your teeth drilled by someone who cannot see exactly what he is doing? No, neither would I!

Testimonials
Having been a user and a great fan of dental loupes for many years operating under magnification has been an integral part of doing the best we possibly can for our patients.
When my inquisitive side got the better of me and i ventured on to the Nuview stand at the Dental show case I took the chance to try the Zeiss Range of operating scopes.
After 10 minute play with the scope on the stand . The offer to try the scope in the surgery was made.
John lent us a floor mounted mobile unit ,...queue the submarine jokes from the patients
I was vey pleasantly surprised how quickly even I an old guy picked up the necessary skills of operating in what is indirect vision. Working on the maxilla was very easy to get used to as are the lower anteriors because we are normally operating using the reflected image from a mirror. . It took a few days of just scaling and just probing before i felt confident enough to use a fast hand piece in the lower molar and premolar regions since the lines of sight are different .It was a challenge but it was fun.
The best way of describing the difference between working with no magnification and a high quality scope that Zeiss and nuview provide would be to take your safety specs smear them with vaseline try and do a check up and then wipe it off and try again.
I decided to buy one
As general dentists it would have been difficult to justify he cost of such a product if we were only to use it for root canal procedures. However...
The design of the scope its ability to pan laterally when carrying out routine examinations and the depth of field provided by the lenses coupled with fantastic day light illumination make this an extremely versatile piece of equipment.Crown preps routine cons and root canal are all performed to a higher standard , and with less operator stress. You are sitting up straight, away from the patient looking straight ahead.
The scope comes with an integral video camera and we have attached a cannon slr which means that good quality promotional and patient educational images are easily produced .
Patients have a screen above the chair and have the opportunity to either watch the tv,a dvd or have their teeth checked and fixed. most prefer to watch their dentistry being done !
On the rare occasions that the operating scope is not being used it tucks up real tight against the wall .
The magnification helps in diagnosis and improves our ability to provide more accurate prognosis. Cracks and splits failing margins are easily detected . Mistakes and delays which are becoming increasingly more expensive to rectify should be reduced. I have more confidence and so do the patients.
I cannot commend The Nuview team highly enough for the friendly advice, and fantastic service they have offered thus far I would recommend them to any one
